Hey guys cheers for checking out my review.
Synopsis:
Set sometime in the future after an apocalyptic event, Eli (Denzel Washington) walks the earth (like Caine in Kung Fu… only he doesn’t wank himself to death at the end) anyway, he walks the earth with the last known copy of the bible. Searching for water he comes across a small town ran by Carnegie (Gary Oldman), Carnegie learns that Eli is carrying this bible and realises the ‘power’ religion has over people, Carnegie will stop at nothing to get hold of it.
Right, I really wasn’t expecting anything from this film… Denzel hasn’t done anything exciting since ‘Training Day’ and the Hughes brothers who – although I feel are competent directors… ‘From Hell’ and ‘Menace II Society’ never really did anything for me (just not my cup of tea). So I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed ‘The Book of Eli’. The Hughes brothers really set the tone at the beginning, anything goes in this wasteland, these are desperate times… and murder and rape is rife. Denzel is awesome as Eli, he makes a welcome return as a cool badass. I totally bought into this guy kicking all kinds of ass, walking the earth and surviving against all odds in this fallout existence. And Gary Oldman is always great in just about everything, especially when he’s playing a sneering evil bastard!
The film looks beautiful especially considering the nuclear canvas, the Hughes brothers successfully employ what looks like some kind of bleach bypass on the film to give it that bleak washed out look. They also make plenty of use of slow motion, particularly when Eli is walking (and believe me there’s plenty of it… but this only makes Eli look cool and none of it overstays its welcome. The action scenes are great, the shootouts look fantastic! Lots of long takes and no choppy editing The Hughes brothers should be commended for this… they give the finger to the MTV generation of directors and show them how it’s really done. The score is great; it subtly adds to the bleakness of this world, it offers lots of old orchestral flavourings mixed in with some great digital sounds.
In fact the only real gripe I have with this picture… is the last 20 minutes, without giving anything away there’s a twist which I feel wasn’t necessary and well…kind of leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth. Because up until then… The book of Eli was great! I know a lot of people who have seen the film will say I’m missing the point, but that ending… just didn’t sit well with me. Other than that though – it’s an expertly crafted flick and I encourage anyone to see it! There’s no doubt this will look gorgeous on blu-ray and will definitely be a day one purchase!
*** ½ (3 ½ out of 5)

100% Agree!!!! I was loving the film until the end! I thought WTF!! How shit! I was really expecting some really cool over the top ending and I got…………..

Just got back from watching this and was going to review myself- would of said exactly what you had said! I actually really liked the twist ( which I actually kind of got onto at the beginning. If you wath the film again you ll see the small hints throughout ) really didn’t like the last 5 minutes though ! What was the need for that? Kinda took his bad ass nothing can touch me aura away with her walking “home” like that- my husband doesn’t agree though, only because he fancies her though Beki(Quote)
