Hey folks, Chris has already covered the synopsis for Inception – so I won’t bother. By now most Nolan fans have already seen Inception and have some kind of view on it… A quick look at metacritic and you’ll find that the majority of critics loved it, all apart from those New Yorkers? Can any of our American friends please explain this to me? Are New York critics theatre purists or something? It seems anytime we get a film that’s universally acclaimed the east coast critics give it a hard time.

Anyway I digress, back onto Inception – contrary to Chris I found Inception to be Nolan’s best film yet – surpassing even The Dark Knight! Christopher Nolan has visualised a film that will be talked about for some time to come, a film for once… that enables audiences to utilize their think tanks, for once we are encouraged to think for ourselves, ideas we can moot over and discuss… for once we the audience, are not spoon fed like dug-up numbskulls. It takes a lot of thought to put together a film a film like this, certain parallels to The Matrix will be drawn and that’s fair. The first fifteen minutes are purposely confusing as Nolan drops us into the world of dream espionage; immediately we are hit with levels of conscious, sublevels of conscious, this is only ringmaster Chris Nolan pulling the wool over our eyes.

The begining may sound confusing, but trust me by the halfway point – the audience is fully immersed and up to speed on the complexity of the plot. This, is a rare feat… most directors would leave their audiences baffled, but Nolan does this and makes it look almost… effortless. Many Kubrick references are scattered throughout Inception, even the zero-g sections lend themselves to Kubrick’s 2001, Nolan seems to be more comfortable shooting action scenes these days… his action scenes are dense and while they may not be as flashy as say Michael Bay’s low angle sun drenched efforts… Nolan still maintains good geography throughout set pieces and doesn’t resort to heavy editing.

Both Dicaprio and Ellen Page nail their performances, Dicaprio is choosing more and more roles that continue to define him post Jack Dawson/Titanic, if you’re not an Ellen Page fan (like Chris) well… this isn’t going to change your mind, personally I thought she was great! I agree with my fellow filmtwat that both Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy steal this flick, I felt like Tom Hardy was auditioning for the role of Bond by the time we got to the end (which believe me - is a good thing!) The little father/son scenes that Cillian Murphy has shows how awesome of an actor Murphy really is. And of course Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues to impress, his zero-g scenes are a clear standout.

I must mention Hans Zimmer’s score… Hans Zimmer continues to evolve as a composer (this flick sounds nothing like anything he’s previously done.) He’s incorporated Johnny Marr’s guitar work beautifully, there’s an air of uneasiness, an uneven tempo that fits this style of the picture perfectly, all becoming more prominent up until the final conclusion. I’ve got a feeling this score will stand the test of time and be used in many future trailers.

Do yourself a favour… If you’re sick of re-makes and rehash’s, if your a fan of film and would like film originality to continue  – then buy a ticket and go see Inception, you won’t be disappointed.

A cognitive and visual treat, especially after a summer of disappointing flops. ***** (5/5)

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of people on the web are discussing the end… there are haters and lovers – the end is what you make of it. As I type…. there are bloggers currently tallying up how many times we see Dicaprio’s totem spin  and fall over. Me… however, I lead a simple life, much like Donnie Darko and Vanilla Sky, the ending is how it is – he accomplishes his mission and gets back to his kids… hence, no frustrated Glenn. However, I respect everyone’s opinions no matter how elaborate. Please leave your comments and theories below and let us know your interpretations……………………………………

For me it’s all in the detail, the ending’s important, whilst opionions differ Nolan would have had an answer, wrapped up in layers of misdirection, clouded in confusion, no work this complex comes to life without an answer. The ending wraps up the whole concept, leaves me settled knowing everything in the world always can always be explained if we look with the right eyes…….

For me the film doesn’t end at the end, it ends half way through. My view of what actually happens; consider the dream that Dicaprio enters whislt in Mombassa! How do we know he ever actually left this dream? We see him spining his totem shorttly afterwards but he gets interputed………The whole subplot of this little room is that people come here to wake up, not dream…………..Thats it, simple, elegant – everything after this is all a dream and Dicaprio is still there in that dim cellar.  (Quote)

  4. Remarkable site, I enjoy that the web pages appears to be! The style is wonderful!  (Quote)
