Just like a bus, we don’t hear from Corban in ages, then two reviews come along at once! Corban Dallas seems to have a new online presence – we’re hoping to hear from him again soon…
Precious, based on the Novel ‘Push’
…by Sapphire. This mouthful is apparently to avoid confusion with the 2009 action film Push (Paul McGuigan), I don’t know what was wrong with just ‘Precious’ either. Nominated for 6 Oscars this is the first serious outing for Lee Daniels and it’s star Gabourey Sidibe.
Plot
Claireece Precious Jones (Sidibe); abused by her mother, raped by her father, fat, illiterate, unloved and unnoticed. After getting pregnant for a second time she is expelled from school and sent to ‘Each One Teach One’ where she meets a new teacher Blue Rain (Paula Patton).
Impressions
Sidibe held her own but my overriding connection with Precious was frustration, not for her situation but through her inactivity. The story and the actress needed to do more to convince us of the shackles which incapacitate those confronted with such extreme abuse. Conversely the supporting cast was outstanding; Patton was perfectly understated, Mo’Nique (her mother, Mary) had me gripping the arm rests and searching for something to launch at the screen and Carey (her councillor, Mrs. Weiss) managed to selflessly allow Sidibe to occasionally shine.
Visually the film was OK, its muted tone perhaps cleverly designed to avoid distraction from the stories weighty themes, but more could have been done to help. I wouldn’t have gone to see this if I wasn’t working my way around the 2010 best picture nominations, and after viewing a few others in the same category I’m convinced they need to re-name the award ‘Most Difficult Subject Matter’, it hasn’t been nominated because it’s a great film with a great lead but it does effectively illuminate a dark corner of our society.
Verdict: 2.5/5 – powerful content, lacking style

This looks like shit and she looks like she’s been beaten with the ugly stick!! pirate98(Quote)
Well pirate98 you thick fuck maybe you enjoy watch animal porn but the film is about a girl who is being sexually abused by her mum and dad and is also being forced fed resulting in her being extremely over weight and not being able to read or write as a result to the amount of physical and mental abuse that she is suffering!!! As for her looks well some people are not born so fucking pretty like yourself you fucking prick!
Anyway, love the review but think a bit harsh on the verdict? I did love the film and thought it was a extremely moving. People are so quick to judge other people and make fun of the way they look and I really loved the way the film tackled this.
I will say that this film is not for everyone! My mum has read the book and also watched the film and was so moved that she ended up in tears by the end. I’m not saying that this is a chick flick but for the more mature adult! Some people have difficulty watching a major blockbuster without uttering the words, “this is shit”….. now these are the type of people that will probably only give there opinion on this film and call precious “a fat ugly fuck”!
Well I have had my rant for the day! Sorry Mr Pirate98 but I hate people judging other people because of the way they look!
I would give it a 4/5 and maybe a 5/5 I really do hope it picks up some awards

Yeah chill I said the film is not for everyone and yes you are entitled to your opinion, I was trying to make a point about you saying that she looks like that she has been beaten with the ugly stick! The film is about the abuse that she receives her hole life from all sorts of people, I reckon 90% of people wouldn’t like the film!
Anyway grow up! go and make a difference in Iraq, I’m not trying to save the friggin planet and I’m not talking religion or politics! djkeef(Quote)
