Ah, Never Back Down. The premise was crap, the trailer was crap and the film was crap… on first viewing. I went to see the film with my friend Slater and Filmtwats very own comic supremo Iain and I admit I didn’t have high expectations and I was glad I didn’t, I thought it was cheesy, badly acted and a waste of Djimon Hounsou. However, both Iain and Slater enjoyed it immensely and even redefined the spelling of the word “awesome” to “Osum!” in honor of the film. I’m not sure if I was just in a bad mood that day (not uncommon), but it just didn’t float my boat and it wasn’t for sometime that I learnt to appreciate the film for what it was. In fact it was only when the dynamic duo of Iain and Slater forced the DVD of it upon me in the guise of a birthday present that I even bothered to watch it again. Anyway, now I’m a complete convert, I get a similar enjoyment out of watching it as I do Highlander, flawed but brilliant and endlessly watchable.

Anyway, I was super-surprised to learn that a sequel is actually in the works (The first film was made on a budget of approx $20 million and made over $40 million at the box office and a further $18 million on DVD sales). Now, doing a quick Google I can’t find much more information on the film, indeed it’s not even listed on IMDB, so there is a good chance this could simply turn into a spiritual sequel and have a completely different name. So far, what we know is that Martial-arts champ Scott Epstein and Australian musician Dean Geyer have both Tweeted that they have signed on to the sequel and will focus more on the Mixed Martial Arts aspect, rather than the street fighting.

The film is being directed by Michael Jai White (Gambol from The Dark Knight) and will tell the story of four fighters who get involved with an illegal underground tournament… erm, kinda like Bloodsport maybe? Anyway, Dean Geyer is most famous for playing Ty Harper in 244 episodes of Aussie soap Neighbours and Scott Epstein was last seen in the feature Numb. Filming is believed to begin in Louisiana very soon…

Interesting tidbit, the original title to the original film was “Get Some“, but the title had sexual connotations that the producers didn’t like so it was decided to change the movie title to “Never Back Down“.

Don’t get me wrong but you can actually learn a lot about it, for example, ”Conrtol the outcome, it’s on you, always has been” meaning in real life you can control whatever happens to you, say you get in a fight, whatever you do there will be an outcome, either bad or good, its your resposibility to control it. You can seriously learn a lot from this film. ;)   (Quote)
