Hiya everyone, a little while back you may have heard that Paramount had napped Saw VI director Kevin Greutert to helm Paranormal Activity 2 (I know, tell me about it!), so Lionsgate brought back previous franchise botherer David Hackl to helm upcoming Saw VII.
THEN Paramount decides to give Paranormal Activity 2 a release date of October 22, (the same as Saw VII) as the first instalment snotted the fifth sequel in the previously unshakable Saw chronicles.
NOW Lionsgate, obviously a little pissed at Paramount, have excersised a clause in Greutert’s contract which gives them an option on his next film – whatever it is. So whether he wants to or not Kevin Greutert HAS to direct Saw VII (and poor David Hackl is out of a job again!). As much as this amuses me (I do get a kick out of contract clauses) is this good for the ailing franchise? Someone being forced to do something is never good for the ol’ creative juices.
And the fact that the series was going a bit gimmicky with the introduction of 3D… well, in my experience it’s these type of low-budget horror/gore fests that give/gave 3D the shit reputation it had (admittedly the days of Red ‘n’ Green glasses 3D where substandard anyway). 3D horrors don’t seem to extend beyond body parts, blood splashes or weapons heading towards the camera at break-neck speeds to give the audience a jump. I can’t imagine the whole feature being in 3D like Avatar or even just for certain environments in the way Tron Legacy plans to, so surely using it as a gimmick now is a massive step back and is only going to harm the format?
I could be wrong of course, Greutert may make the best of it in order to secure further work and it could be a visual treat…
