You may have read Glenn’s recent review of disaster pic 2012, in short, great effects but nothing particularly new. Well, Roland Emmerich is clearly not taking any chances and is doing his best to get anything green-lit before the world realises 2012 is actually quite shit, and coupled with the bombshell that was 10,000BC, could soon find himself out of work.
There were rumbling the other week about and Independence Day sequel and that the only stumbling block was Will Smith not signing on, well now Emmerich is now talking up TWO sequels to ID4. The disaster porn helmer told MTV that he wants to return to the franchise (nothing to do with dollars of course) but the story is too big for just one film!
“What we want to do in the next – it’s actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc,” he stated.
“Independence Day was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that.”
And what about potential titles Mr Emmerich?: “ID4-ever, Part I and II maybe?”
The 54-year-old continued: “The idea is just to continue the story and actually I don’t know how many years ago this was – 12, 13, 14 years ago – and just continue where it ended.”
In fairness I haven’t watched the original probably since it was released on VHS (I wasn’t overly thrilled with it), but I have two problems here the first being – the first one had very little in the way of story – but you managed to stretch that for one film, I’m pretty sure that if you tried hard enough you could fit this “bigger arc” into one film.
And secondly the title: ID4-ever?!??! Are you shittin’ me? That sounds like graffiti on a bus shelter scrawled by a loved up teenager! ID-4-Eva! If that is your idea for a good title – I don’t have ANY hope for the film…
