Roger Ebert is part of the reason why I have my share of the Filmtwats site, I remember when my mother purchased the family’s first PC back in 1995, back when the Pentium 100 was considered a beast with a massive 1.8 gigabyte hard drive! With this new purchase, along came some goodies like Microsoft Encarta and Cinemania. Well it was through the power and awesomeness that was Cinemania that allowed us UK folks to read the wisdom and genius of Roger Ebert, no longer would I have to endure to the ramblings of one Barry Norman!
Through the infinite power of the “information superhighway” (I miss that word! If any of you know me… I’m in charge of a failing campaign on facebook, in the hopes that one day we will resurrect the word “information superhighway” from the depths of Hades!) Anyway, through the wonders of the web, I was finally able to view episodes of At the Movies with Ebert & Roeper! Well, like many of you, I sad to hear that Roger Ebert had been in a long battle with thyroid cancer, a battle which has seen Ebert loose the use of his vocal cords.
Well Cancer hasn’t beaten him, it still hasn’t stopped the guy from writing, of course not he’s a machine… After surgery, he even went back to review films he missed such as Casino Royale, Anyway it may not be the last time we hear his voice thanks to some tech wizards.
From Yahoo News:
Ebert recorded commentaries for DVD movies before he lost his voice. A Scottish company called CereProc (SAYR’-uh-prok) blended digital recordings of Ebert speaking to make his text-to-audio voice.
Ebert writes that the voice will be heard predicting Oscar winners on a segment of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” airing Tuesday.
He says he may be able to use the voice for radio and Webcasts
Film fans out there, if you haven’t already – I urge you to check out Ebert’s website and long catalogue of reviews at: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/
