Hey guys, I’m a big fan of movie scores, in my opinion a film score can make or break a film. There’s nothing more off-putting than a fucking random horrible piano tune played during a whodunit thriller… Movie scores are just as important as the image projected on the screen, silent film would have been nothing without the music that accompanied it. So here at Filmtwats.com I present to you a list of some of my favourite scores, I’m going to do things a little different though… I’m going to stay clear of iconic film scores we all know and love, scores such as Jaws, Star Wars, The Terminator, The Thing etc…  As we all know these have fantastic unforgettable scores, but we’ve seen these in so many lists dominating the top 10 already! So these are my scores, scores that I feel are beautiful but have been overlooked or forgotten!

Remember this is my opinion and all opinion is subjective, but feel free to chime in and tell me your favourites! Remember you can purchase these all these scores from iTunes.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Tan Dun

An absolutely perfect score for a prefect film, no matter what problems or stress, life can sometimes bring you, listening to this whole score somehow makes everything ok again!

Speed: Mark Mancina

I love this score, it may have nineties written all over it, but the first time I ever seen this flick -- I was completely captivated. Unable to move, refusing to even go to the toilet…  the sweaty palms, nervous disposition and an increasing bladder pain was in due in part to the kinetic action from Jan De Bont and the accompanying score supplied by one Mark Mancina.

Black hawk down: Hans Zimmer

Awesome score by Hans Zimmer that suits the dusty, gritty style of the picture it includes some of the familiar Zimmer military brass and has a beautiful song (featured below) featuring Hans Zimmer regular Lisa Gerrard which plays the audience out during the credits, a song that still gives me goose bumps every time it plays.

The Last Samurai: Hans Zimmer

The prodigy that is Hans Zimmer continues to impress with age and pretty much dominates my top ten! The Last Samurai is an awesome soundtrack and worthy a purchase, and in my opinion the soundtrack is much better than the actual film.

Fight Club: The Dust Brothers

An absolutely chaotic sound for an unforgettable film, a film that pretty much summed up the culture for a whole generation. Never again would going to the movies be the same again, Tyler Durden is this generations Travis Bickle, this one of my favourite films of all time! David Fincher was a true genius and way ahead of the curve when he hired The Dust Brothers to score Fight Club.

Solaris: Cliff Martinez

Unbelievable soundtrack to a great movie, this is one of them instances where the composer really elevates the film to another level. Cliff Martinez creates a beautiful score which makes you feel uneasy but yet at the same time settles you. It’s beautiful, simple and absolutely genius. On a side note this piece has been in tons of Volkswagen adverts.

Alien 3: Elliot Goldenthal

When scoring Alien3, Elliot Goldenthal set himself the task of making the audience feel like the predator herself hunting the victims. Well I think Elliot executed this feeling perfectly, the sense of hopelessness and dread for them poor folks on Fury 161 is all conveyed almost effortlessly here.  In my opinion this is one of the best scores ever, they just don’t score ’em like this anymore!

Insomnia: David Julyan

Before The Descent, there was Insomnia, David Julyan a gifted English composer is definitely one to watch out for. Julyan’s work conveys a sense of dread perfectly for the protagonist in Insomnia, an underrated classic that is often criminally overlooked.

Sunshine: John Murphy

Another classic from director Danny Boyle, and an awesome soundtrack for awesome film! Just when I thought nothing could top Clint Martinez’s work on Solaris, along this came and blew me away! I urge any fans and nonfans of the science fiction genre to give this flick a try. Beautiful filmmaking at its best, no words can describe how John Murphy’s score supplements this film, absolutely perfect in every way.

Crimson Tide: Hans Zimmer

One of the best scores for a film ever! This score could very well make you salute your TV… if anyone ever asked me to try and sum up Hans Zimmer’s work, I would play them this! Hans Zimmer does what he does best and you can hear it in full effect in Crimson Tide, the brass instruments, choir and synthesisers are all in full swing. No fucking around, if you want to ever get past that damn plateau at the gym, stick this in your iPod I shit you not!

Do NOT forget Clint Mansell, the master composer behind such soundtracks as the beautiful “The Fountain” score, Requiem for a Dream, and also the awesome movie “Moon” from last year….

Also, Lisa Gerrard’s score of Michael Mann’s “The Insider”  (Quote)

I finally found a piece of music I’ve been looking for since I was a kid. I only remembered one little bit and unfortunately I didn’t remember what movie it was off. Alien 3 would have been the last movie I thought of though. “Adagio” from the Alien 3 soundtrack is one of those themes that inspires even without any relation to the movie. Another inspiring score is “Theme from Antarctica” by Vangelis.  (Quote)
